Infants of Dunwoody was founded in 1985 by Mrs. Laquetta Brummett (pictured with grandson John Boyes) in response to a lack of quality childcare facilities for working families in the Dunwoody and North Atlanta area. From its inception, Infants of Dunwoody sought to not only provide exceptional care, but also offer developmental activities for infants and toddlers—a concept that was atypical of the time.
In 1986, as the original class of infants were becoming toddlers, the need for this type of program in the community was overwhelming. In an effort to continue meeting the developmental needs of enrolled children and a desire to provide the program to more families, the school was relocated to its current location in the Shops of Dunwoody.
The new location of Infants of Dunwoody opened in February of 1987 with eighteen children pre-enrolled. By the end of the first week, the school was full at thirty children. Mrs. Brummett along with her daughter Ginevra, and Dr. Karen Watwood, Ph.D began what has become one of the oldest and most successful programs for early learning in Dunwoody. The school was featured on the cover of "Fortune" Magazine and has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, and on ABC, CBS, and NBC national news outlets as well as local networks featuring stories on quality care.
The continued support of families and the ongoing need for a developmental program in the area led to the expansion of the school in 1990 and again in 1992, with the addition of Dunwoody Academy for ages three to five. Infants of Dunwoody and Dunwoody Academy continue to be an integral part of the Dunwoody community.
